Earthquakes in Russia — Page 20

Russia records earthquakes steadily rather than in isolated bursts, with 45 events in the past 30 days, and 541 of the events on record reached magnitude 5 or above — the level at which damage becomes a genuine concern for vulnerable construction. Russia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the belt of subduction zones responsible for roughly 90% of the world's earthquakes.

1,958 earthquakes have been recorded in Russia in our catalogue, 45 of them in the past 30 days.

The average magnitude is 4.8 and the average focal depth 38 km. 1954 events reached magnitude 4 or above and 541 reached magnitude 5 or above.

The strongest earthquake recorded in Russia in this period was a magnitude 8.7 event near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia on 29 July 2025, at a depth of 18 km. A magnitude 8.7 earthquake radiates roughly 169.2 million tons of TNT equivalent in seismic energy.

Locations recording the most events include Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (714), Vilyuchinsk (423), Severo-Kuril’sk (402), Ozernovskiy (141), Kuril’sk (66).

88% of events here are shallow (under 70 km), 11% intermediate (70–300 km) and 1% deep-focus (over 300 km). The mix is dominated by shallow crustal events, with a minority of intermediate-depth activity.

The deepest event on record here was a magnitude 4.4 earthquake at 590 km beneath Pos’yet, Russia on 16 December 2025.

By band, the catalogue holds 4 in the magnitude 3 range, 1413 in the magnitude 4 range, 499 in the magnitude 5 range, 33 in the magnitude 6 range, 7 in the magnitude 7 range, 2 in the magnitude 8 range.

The busiest single day was 30 July 2025, with 170 recorded events.

12 of these events carry a USGS link to NOAA tsunami information. That link flag does not mean a tsunami occurred or that a warning was issued.
